I Timothy 2:13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
I Timothy 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
I Timothy 2:15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
Colossians 3:23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
Colossians 3:24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.
I Peter 4:1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind<1771>: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
I Peter 4:2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

When we observe our world today, however, things are not so good. There are famines, droughts, war, etc. In the physical world, everything tends to wear down, wear out and breaks down becoming less and less useable. In the living world, every animal is continually in a struggle against other animals and against disease, aging, and death. In the cultural world, one civilization rises and declines, and then, over and over again another civilization takes its place for a while. In the spiritual and moral world, people find it easier to do wrong instead of right – It is easier to ‘go with the flow’ drifting downward, then to struggle upward. Our world is full of hatred, crime, war, pollution, selfishness, corruption, and all forms of evil. Did something go wrong with God’s good creation?
God was sending a message to Adam & Eve, while at the same time leaving and later expounding on His message to Adam & Eve’s offspring. This message we called in the last lesson the “Everlasting Gospel”, teaches us what mindset we need to have in order to be examples to those around us.
I. The Bondage Of Corruption
Genesis 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed <02233> and her seed <02233>; it shall bruise <07779> thy head <07218>, and thou shalt bruise <07779> his heel <06119>.
Genesis 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. {to thy…: or, subject to thy husband}
Genesis 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Genesis 3:18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; {bring…: Heb. cause to bud}
Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
A. The Curse is Really a Whole Series of Curses
1. The curse on the animal kingdom
2. The curse on the serpent
3. The special curse on the woman
4. The curse on Adam and his descendants
5. The curse on the ground
B. Adam Had Been Appointed To Exercise Dominion Over The Earth
1. Adam was now beginning to die
2. Adam’s dominion would also begin to die
Romans 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
Romans 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. {the…: or, every creature}
C. 3 Main Aspects Of The Curse Correspond To The 3 Created Entities
1. The physical elements of the earth were created first – Genesis 1:1
2. The animal soul or consciousness was created second – Genesis 1:21
3. The spiritual nature of God in man was third – Genesis 1:27
D. The Corresponding Aspects of the Curse
1. Likewise, the curse fell on the physical elements – Genesis 3:18
2. Likewise the curse fell on the animal kingdom – Genesis 3:14
3. Likewise, the curse fell on man – Genesis 3:16, 19
E. Personal Aspects Of The Curse Are In Order Of Occurrence
1. On Satan 2. On Eve 3. On Adam
F. Adam & Eve’s Position In The Curse Was “In Hope of Eventual Redemption”
Romans 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
G. For Satan The Curse Was Final & Irrevocable
1. He had not only rebelled against God
2. Now he had infected man with his rebellion
Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
H. The Curse On The Serpent
1. He was cursed above all cattle and above every beast of the earth
a. Not because of direct blame on the snake’s part or God’s injustice
1. Each animal had been created for a special purpose
2. There were creeping things on earth since creation – he became one
3. All other animals were brought under the curse as well
b. This is a perpetual reminder to man
1. Of the instrument used in man’s fall
2. Of the final destruction of Satan himself
2. Curse then directed to the spirit controlling the body of the serpent
a. The earth had been placed under man’s dominion
b. Satan probably deceived himself into thinking man would be his alley
1. This deception would include the woman who would bear children
2. This also would include the allegiance of the woman’s control over Adam
3. This deception would have to include the offspring
I. The Curse On The Woman –
1. Each experience of birth - a beautiful picture of Christ’s deliverance
2. Satan was deceived most of all
a. The woman would not become his alley – “I will put enmity between thee and the woman”
b. The woman would not rule over the husband – “Thy desire will be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee”
c. Conception would not be easy or rapid – “I will greatly multiply thy sorrow, and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children.”
3. The woman, in childbirth, would actually become a “Type of Christ”
a. Christ used the woman’s travail to compare earthly trials & Christian hope
John 16:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
John 16:21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
John 16:22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
b. Isaiah prophesied of Christ’s travail
Isaiah 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
Isaiah 53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
c. Likewise the book of Hebrews says about Christ:
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
d. Can we see why Paul said:
I Timothy 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
I Timothy 2:15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
J. The Curse On Adam
1. The full force of the curse fell on Adam – (Also naturally included Eve)
a. Adam would now have to work and toil for food
b. Finally, death would triumph, and Adam would return to the dust
2. The ground was cursed – thorns & thistles grew instead of crops
3. All things now under the bondage of corruption (decay)
II. The Protevangelium – “First Gospel” – Escape From Death
A. Victory would not be easy – Not only would he be eventually destroyed
B. There would come One
1. Not of man’s seed
2. Uniquely He will be the “Seed of the woman”
a. Miraculously conceived
b. Virgin Born
C. He will not be under your dominion – You will injure Him, He will crush you
D. Let’s Look At The Prophecy & the terms used in Genesis 3:15:
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed <02233> and her seed <02233>; it shall bruise <07779> thy head <07218>, and thou shalt bruise <07779> his heel <06119>.

The Prophecy Rephrased: Although the seed of the serpent would seriously fall upon and injure seriously the hinder part of the Seed of the Woman, The Seed of the Woman will eventually fall upon and crush your complete company.
E. The “Seed of the woman” Will Deliver From The Bondage Of Death
Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
F. We Do Have Hope – Even living under the curse
Romans 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
Romans 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
III. What Was Adam’s Mind as He Lived Under Curse?
A. The Bible Doesn’t tell us exactly, but the next verse gives us an idea:
Genesis 3:20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. {Eve: Heb. Chavah: that is Living}
Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
1. Adam must have accepted God’s terms - He called his wife’s name Eve
2. Adam must have accepted God’s provision to cover his guilt
3. Adam must have accepted God working His plan – Even if He didn’t understand
B. Adam was not defeated by his “trial”
1. Adam had free-will and could have not accepted God’s provision
a. Adam could have believed the lies of the serpent instead of God’s Word
b. But Adam did not, He agreed with God’s Word
2. This is what John was talking about: settle confusion about the word “confess”
I John 1: 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
I John 1: 9 If we confess<3670> our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

2b3) to confess, i.e. to admit or declare one’s self guilty of what one is accused of
3) to profess 3a) to declare openly, speak out freely 3b) to profess one’s self the worshipper of one 4) to praise, celebrate
IV. An Illustration In The Life Of Joseph
A. Joseph was his Jacob’s favorite son
B. This favoritism by Jacob caused jealousy toward Joseph by his brothers
1. His brothers hated Joseph
2. His brothers wanted to kill Joseph
Genesis 37: 4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
C. Joseph dreamed a dream:
Genesis 37: 5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.
Genesis 37: 6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:
Genesis 37: 7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.
Genesis 37: 8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
Genesis 37: 9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
Genesis 37: 10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?
Genesis 37: 11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.
D. The brothers were off tending the sheep – Jacob sent Joseph to them
Genesis 37:18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.
Genesis 37:19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.
E. The Brothers wanted to kill Joseph – Rueben intervened
Genesis 37:20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
Genesis 37:21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.
Genesis 37:22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.
Genesis 37:23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;
Genesis 37:24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
F. I Wonder What Was On Joseph’s Mind As He Went Through This Trial?
1. Joseph must have accepted God’s terms
2. Joseph must have accepted God’s provision
3. Joseph must have accepted God working His plan – Even if He didn’t understand
G. It Gets Worse Not Better - The Brothers sold Joseph
Genesis 37:26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
Genesis 37:27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. Genesis 37:28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
1. Now Joseph was apart from his family at 17 years of age
2. Now Joseph would have no inheritance
3. Now Joseph would live in a strange country as a slave
Genesis 37:31 And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;
Genesis 37:32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no.
Genesis 37:33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
Genesis 37:34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
H. Joseph was sold to Potiphar – But Potipher saw something different in Joseph
Genesis 39:3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
Genesis 39:4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
Genesis 39:5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had,
I. It Was Undoubtedly A Little Easier To Accept God’s Provision Now
J. But Potiphar’s Wife Had Another Idea:
Genesis 39:11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
Genesis 39:12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
Genesis 39:13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
Genesis 39:14 That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice: {loud: Heb. great}
Genesis 39:15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.
Genesis 39:16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
K. Now Joseph Was Falsely Accused And Thrown Into Prison
L. God, However, Gave Joseph Favor With The Jail Keeper
M. Joseph Was Able To Interpret Dreams Of Two Other Inmates
N. But It Was Two Years Before Word Got To Pharoh
O. I Wonder What Was On Joseph’s Mind While He Was In Prison.
1. Joseph must have accepted God’s terms
2. Joseph must have accepted God’s provision
3. Joseph must have accepted God working His plan – Even if He didn’t understand
P. Joseph Was Able To Interpret Pharaoh’s Dream
Q. Pharaoh Made Joseph 2nd Ruler Over All Egypt
R. This Enabled Jacob’s Family To Be Saved In A Famine
S. If Joseph Had Known All This At First – “Bring On The Tribulations Lord”
T. Why Did God Put Joseph Through This Trial?
1. Joseph had to know the way of the Egyptians to work in God’s plan
2. Joseph had to learn to put his trust in the Lord
3. Can we see that God takes as long as it takes for His people to learn to trust Him
V. What Is The Purpose Of Trials?
A. Let’s Let James Teach Us On Trials:
James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; {temptations: or, trials}
James 1:3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
James 1:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
James 1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
James 1:7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
James 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
James 1:9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
James 1:10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
James 1:11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
James 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
B. Does God Include Sin In His Trials?
James 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: {evil: or, evils}
James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
1. Can We See That Enduring Temptations Brings A “Crown Of Life”
2. Can We See That Giving In To Lust Brings Death
C. Especially During Trials We Need To Meekly Receive God’s Word
James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
D. So Many Times We Think Our Particular Trial Is Worse
1. Worse Than What Anyone Else Is Going Through
2. We Even Can Begin To Blame God For Our Situation
3. God’s Word Is The Remedy For This Wrong Mindset:
Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. {author: or, beginner}
Hebrews 12:3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
Hebrews 12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
Hebrews 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
Hebrews 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
Hebrews 12:7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
Hebrews 12:8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
Hebrews 12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
Hebrews 12:10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. {after…: or, as seemed good, or, meet to them}
Hebrews 12:11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
Hebrews 12:12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
Hebrews 12:13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. {straight: or, even}
Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
Hebrews 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; {fail…: or, fall from}
Hebrews 12:16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
Hebrews 12:17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. {place…: or, way to change his mind}
Hebrews 12:18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
Hebrews 12:19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
Hebrews 12:20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
Hebrews 12:21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
Hebrews 12:22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
Hebrews 12:23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, {written: or, enrolled}
Hebrews 12:24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. {covenant: or, testament}
Hebrews 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
Hebrews 12:26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
Hebrews 12:27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. {are shaken: or, may be shaken}
Hebrews 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
VI. The Word Of God Teaches Us How To Endure Temptations
Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Colossians 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. {affection: or, mind}
Colossians 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
Colossians 3:6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
Colossians 3:7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
Colossians 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
Colossians 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
Colossians 3:11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
Colossians 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
Colossians 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. {quarrel: or, complaint}
Colossians 3:14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Colossians 3:18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
