Coachlight Bible Study – Lesson IX – Genesis 3:1 – 3:21

The Curse – Part III – The Serpent’s Curse & The Everlasting Gospel

Revelation 14:6  And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

Revelation 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Romans 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

Romans 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. {the…: or, every creature}

Romans 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Romans 8:24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

Romans 8:25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Romans 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

We have learned that after God finished His six days of creation, He pronounced everything as “very good”. Before Adam sinned, there was no suffering, no pain, no disease, no struggle for existence, no sin, and most importantly, no death.

When we observe our world today, however, things are not so good.  There are famines, droughts, war, etc.  In the physical world, everything tends to wear down, wear out and breaks down becoming less and less useable. In the living world, every animal is continually in a struggle against other animals and against disease, aging, and death.  In the cultural world, one civilization rises and declines, and then, over and over again another civilization takes its place for a while.  In the spiritual and moral world, people find it easier to do wrong instead of right – It is easier to ‘go with the flow’ drifting downward, then to struggle upward.  Our world is full of hatred, crime, war, pollution, selfishness, corruption, and all forms of evil.  Did something go wrong with God’s good creation?

Many just do not understand what really happened to the good creation, and tend to ask philosophically: “How could a good and loving God allow such evil things to happen?  No religion or “science” can ultimately answer the struggle or craving for Truth.  The Truth, however, is that God Himself was proclaiming the Everlasting Gospel since the “foundations of the world.”

I. The Word of God

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, ….

Genesis 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: {thou…: Heb. eating thou shalt eat}

Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

II. The Temptation

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Genesis 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Genesis 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Genesis 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Genesis 3:6  And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

A. The First Subtle Trick - The Serpent “Twisted” God’s Word (Verse 1)

1. The serpent led Eve to question God’s authority and goodness

2. The serpent quoted chapter 2 verse 16, but

3. He left out the “but” in verse 17

B. The Woman’s Response – Adding & Subtracting from God’s Word (Vs. 2-3)

1. The woman left out the name of the tree - God had used it’s name

a. Not calling a thing what it is is deceiving

b. Illustration: “It is not really a lie, just a little white lie”

c. Illustration: “It’s not an abortion, only discarding of an unwanted pregnancy”

d. Illustration: “I’m basically a good person, I deal with God in my own way”

2. The woman added the concept of touching the fruit – God did not say this

C. The Second Subtle Trick – The Serpent Denied God’s Word

1. God’s Word Stated:

Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

2. The fact that God’s warning stated death meant nothing to the serpent

3. Satan said that God only feared that they would learn too much

4. This was the “killing blow”

a. Just twisting God’s Word was not enough

b. The serpent had to deny God’s Word – Called God a liar by stating: “ye shall be as gods”

5. This was the same temptation that led to Satan’s downfall:

Isaiah 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

Isaiah 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

6. As soon as a person begins to question God’s authority or deny God’s Word, he sets himself up as his own god.

a. Now he is deciding for himself the standards of truth and righteousness

b. God does not anymore set the rules, man does

III. The First Human Sin

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. {pleasant: Heb. a desire}

Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. {aprons: or, things to gird about}

Genesis 3:8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. {cool: Heb. wind}

Genesis 3:9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

Genesis 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

Genesis 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

Genesis 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

Genesis 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

A.  Eve had allowed her mind and emotions to be affected by the serpent

B. The Satanic influence continued as Eve continued to gaze at the forbidden tree

C. As the Satanic influence of doubt & pride continued it became more beautiful

1. It was “Good for Food”

a. It was appealing to the physical appetite – Lust of the Flesh

b. Appealed to the body

2. It was “Pleasant to the Eyes” – Lust of the  Eyes

a. It was appealing to the emotions or the esthetic senses

b. Appealed to the soul

3. It was “Desired to make one wise” – Pride of Life

a. Appealing to pride of knowledge & spiritual insight

b. Appealed to the spirit

I John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

I John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

I John 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

D. Temptations Can Be Directed Against The Body, Soul Or Spirit – Or Like In Eve’s Case – Against All Three.

E. Eve’s Sin Was Not The Eating Of The Fruit – That Was Only The Result Of The Wrong Mindset

V. The Immediate Consequences of Man’s First Sin

Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. {aprons: or, things to gird about}

Genesis 3:8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. {cool: Heb. wind}

A.  They Knew They Were Naked

1. They knew no guilt when God the first marriage was consummated

2. The guilt came after Adam’s sin – Why?

3. Remember God’s Command:

Genesis 1:28 … God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, ….

4. Now Adam & Eve realized that the whole line of human life was now corrupted

5. Adam & Eve now knew guilt

a. They now knew they were naked

b. They now knew all of their children would have the seed of rebellion

c. Their guilt was centered on their procreative organs

6. They decided to hide from each other and from God.

B. They Sewed Fig Leaves Together And Made Themselves Aprons

1. These aprons would not & could not hide the guilt of their rebellion to God

2. These aprons only hid their guilt from each other

C. No Longer Had The Fellowship With God Which Is Why They Were Created

1. They Hid Themselves

2. They made excuses for hiding from God’s presence

D. The Fact That They Felt Shame Showed There Was Hope For Their Salvation

1. With no guilt or shame, the only remedy is judgment & condemnation

2. It is the Word of God that brings conviction of sin – Stay in the Word

I Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

VI. The Lesson From The First Sin

A. Fig leaves couldn’t hide Adam’s guilt caused by rebellion against God’s Word

1. Notice It took an act of God

2. Notice Adam had nothing to do with it.

3. Notice that God shed innocent blood to cover Adam’s guilt

4. Notice that God, himself, clothed them – not themselves

B. Likewise, our own self-made “righteousness” serve to cover our sinful hearts

Isaiah 64: 6  But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

C. We need today, just like Adam did, the “Garments of Salvation,” the “Robes of Righteousness”

Isaiah 61: 10  I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

D. No One Will Escape God’s Judgment With Anything That He, Himself:

1. Can make or fashion

2. Can accomplish

VII. The Bondage Of Corruption

Genesis 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed <02233> and her seed <02233>; it shall bruise <07779> thy head <07218>, and thou shalt bruise <07779> his heel <06119>.

Genesis 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. {to thy…: or, subject to thy husband}

Genesis 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

Genesis 3:18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; {bring…: Heb. cause to bud}

Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

A. The Curse is Really a Whole Series of Curses

1. The curse on the animal kingdom

2. The curse on the serpent

3. The special curse on the woman

4. The curse on Adam and his descendants

5. The curse on the ground

B. Adam Had Been Appointed To Exercise Dominion Over The Earth

1. Adam was now beginning to die

2. Adam’s dominion would also begin to die

Romans 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

Romans 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. {the…: or, every creature}

C. 3 Main Aspects Of The Curse Correspond To The 3 Created Entities

1. The physical elements of the earth were created first – Genesis 1:1

2. The animal soul or consciousness was created second – Genesis 1:21

3. The spiritual nature of God in man was third – Genesis 1:27

D. The Corresponding Aspects of the Curse

1. Likewise, the curse fell on the physical elements – Genesis 3:18

2. Likewise the curse fell on the animal kingdom – Genesis 3:14

3. Likewise, the curse fell on man – Genesis 3:16, 19

E. Personal Aspects Of The Curse Are In Order Of Occurrence

1. On Satan 2. On Eve 3. On Adam

F. Adam & Eve’s Position In The Curse Was “In Hope of Eventual Redemption”

Romans 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

G. For Satan The Curse Was Final & Irrevocable

1. He had not only rebelled against God

2. Now he had infected man with his rebellion

Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

H. The Curse On The Serpent

1. He was cursed above all cattle and above every beast of the earth

a. Not because of direct blame on the snake’s part or God’s injustice

1. Each animal had been created for a special purpose

2. There were creeping things on earth since creation – he became one

3. All other animals were brought under the curse as well

b. This is a perpetual reminder to man

1. Of the instrument used in man’s fall

2. Of the final destruction of Satan himself

2. Curse then directed to the spirit controlling the body of the serpent

a. The earth had been placed under man’s dominion

b. Satan probably deceived himself into thinking man would be his alley

1. This deception would include the woman who would bear children

2. This also would include the allegiance of the woman’s control over Adam

3. This deception would have to include the offspring

4. But Satan was deceived most of all

a. The woman would not become his alley – “I will put enmity between thee and the woman”

b. The woman would not rule over the husband – “Thy desire will be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee”

c. Conception would not be easy or rapid – “I will greatly multiply thy sorrow, and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children.”

VIII. The Protevangelium – “First Gospel” – Escape From Death

A. Victory would not be easy – Not only would he be eventually destroyed

B. There would come One

1. Not of man’s seed

2. Uniquely He will be the “Seed of the woman”

a. Miraculously conceived

b. Virgin Born

C. He will not be under your dominion – You will injure Him, He will crush you

D. Let’s Look At The Prophecy & the terms used in Genesis 3:15:

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed <02233> and her seed <02233>; it shall bruise <07779> thy head <07218>, and thou shalt bruise <07779> his heel <06119>.

The Prophecy Rephrased: Although the seed of the serpent would seriously fall upon and injure seriously the hinder part of the Seed of the Woman, The Seed of the Woman will eventually fall upon and crush your complete company.

E. What is the “seed of the serpent”?

1. Anyone who willfully sets himself at enmity with the Seed of the Woman

2. These are partakers in the very character of the adversary

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Ephesians 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

3. Those that seek to oppose God’s purpose in creation & redemption

4. The primary “seed of the serpent” is the soon coming “son of perdition”

II Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

a. He is the antichrist

b. He is the beast to whom the Dragon gives his power & authority

Revelation 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

F. What is the “Seed of the Woman” Who Will Destroy The seed of the serpent?

1. Those that are in right relationship with God (Means agreeing with His Word)

a. This relationship is by faith

b. This relationship makes them “children of the Father”

2. The Primary Seed of the Woman is Christ – Who destroys satan:

G. This promise is fulfilled in Christ

1. He seemed to be mortally wounded on the cross, but rose again & will soon:

Revelation 20:10  And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

2. He, in dying was bruised for our iniquities:

Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. {wounded: or, tormented} {stripes: Heb. bruise}

Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

3. He satisfied the just requirements of God’s holiness

4. But it doesn’t stop there:

:

I Corinthians 15:19  If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

I Corinthians 15:20  But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

I Corinthians 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

I Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

I Corinthians 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.

I Corinthians 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

I Corinthians 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

I Corinthians 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

I Corinthians 15:27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.

I Corinthians 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

5. This prophecy is referenced in Isaiah:

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

6. Then again, not stopping there:

Isaiah 9:6  For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:7  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

H. This Prophecy Forecasts An Age-Long “Battle Of The Seeds”

1. The promised Seed would be born of a woman

a. Satan knew not which woman

b. Satan knew not which time in history the Seed of the Woman would be born

Matthew 13:37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;

Matthew 13:38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

Matthew 13:39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

Matthew 13:40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

Matthew 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; {things…: or, scandals}

Matthew 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 13:43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

2. This begins with Cain & Able:

I John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

I John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. {is born: or, has been born}

I John 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

I John 3:11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. {message: or, commandment}

I John 3:12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

2. It is evident in stories like the birth of Moses & Christ

3. It is an age-long battle that culminates:

Revelation 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: {wonder: or, sign}

Revelation 12:2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.

Revelation 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. Revelation 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

Revelation 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

Revelation 12:8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Revelation 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Revelation 12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

Revelation 12:13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.

Revelation 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Revelation 12:15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

Revelation 12:16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.

Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

4. This will be the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy

Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

5. This is what the Lord was talking about as He looked to the future:
